Indeed, it is matter of great pride for the Fergusson College that the department of Sanskrit Language happens to be one of its constituting Departments. Dr. V. S. Apte, the then Professor of Sanskrit, happened to be the first Principal of this college. Prin. Apte is remembered by the world for his Practical Sanskrit-English Dictionary.
Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the father of Indian unrest against the British rule taught Sanskrit and Mathematics in the college. His contribution to Sanskrit studies hardly requires any repetition. A number of prominent names on the Sanskrit horizon of the early 20th century were associated with Fergusson College. Prof. V. K. Rajwade of this department is remembered for his scholarly translation of the Nirukta in Marathi, Critical study of the word in the Rigveda etc. Similarly, Prof. P.D. Gune who taught Sanskrit here is remembered for his contribution to Comparative Philology. Prof. P.L. Vaidya was well known for his translation of the Bramhasutra-Shankarbhashya, Shribhashya and works on the Mahapurana and Sharangdhara Samhita.
