Department of Chemistry

The chemistry department of the Fergusson College started in 1894-95 i.e. nearly a decade after the college was established. This is one of the largest science departments of the college and Deccan Education Society, Pune. In its history of 118 years it has grown considerably.

The department is located in an independent and large building which houses two big classrooms (C-6 & C-16) and seven spacious laboratories. The department offers instructions to students from Class XI right upto post-graduation. The average strength of undergraduate class is nearly 1000 and 200 of the M. Sc. Courses in Chemistry.

In September 1994 non-grant post graduate course in Organic Chemistry was started in the department which contributed to the development of the department. Later in 2006 M. Sc in Analytical Chemistry and Biochemistry was also started. During last eighteen years post graduate results are excellent.

The M. Sc. students do their projects as one of the practical course and their work is of very good quality raising possibilities of research publications.  The academic students have been excellent with very good results over 28 years. Many of our students successfully clear competitive examinations like SET, NET, IIT Entrance, GATE, GRE, TOEFEL, CSIR examinations.
