Department of Philosophy

The Philosophy Department at Fergusson College, Pune, has a long-standing history, established in 1885, making it the oldest philosophy department in the city and one of the only two to offer Philosophy as a major for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Pune City. Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, a key founder of the Deccan Education Society (DES), was the department’s first Professor of History and Logic. The department takes pride in its alumni and former faculty, including R. D. Ranade, who later became the Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University and made significant contributions to Indian Philosophy.  

The foundations of the department were laid by eminent persons such as Prof. Gopal Ganesh Agarkar Dr. R.D. Ranande and the tradition of excellence in teaching philosophy continued, with the recent former heads of the department Professor J.E. Lobo (retired in 2008) and Dr. Deepti Gangavane (retired in 2019) being instrumental in making the subject popular not just in the college but in the city.

The department is committed to providing a comprehensive understanding of the discipline of philosophy, as reflected in its course structure. The curriculum covers Indian as well as Western philosophical perspectives from the classical to the contemporary period. Minor courses are offered in Ethics and Good Life, Living Ethical Debates, Social and Political Philosophy, and Aesthetics. Skill-based and vocational courses are also integrated, focusing on Critical Thinking, Academic Writing, Dealing with Emotions through Logic-Based Therapy, and Philosophical Practice. Additionally, the department provides Courses in Logic, including Syllogistic Reasoning, Propositional Logic, Predicate Logic, Methodology of Science, and Traditions in Indian Logic.  

The department has collaborations with organizations such as ChaloThinkKare, Impact Solutions Lab, PPAI, and WiseOne HelpSelf Wellness LLP to provide students with community engagement programs and introductory courses and certifications in Philosophical Practice and Philosophical Counselling.  

The department employs interactive learning, critical thinking development, student engagement, a holistic approach, and engagement with original texts from both Indian and Western traditions of philosophy as its teaching-learning practices.  

The department urges students to Question, Philosophize and Engage with the Universe Within and Without and aims to help students know themselves and the world they live in through multiple perspectives.  

Socratic Association – Students’ Club

The department boasts of one of the oldest student clubs of college, Socratic Association which was established in 1915. A club run by the students and for the students, it gives a platform to students to have discussions, debates, presentations on philosophical themes, ranging from purely theoretical to applied and contemporary concerns. The activities of the department are driven entirely by the students and the role of the teachers is only as the facilitators for the year long events of the club.

Tattva – Departmental Festival

Tattva, the annual fest of the philosophy department, is amongst the most popular fests in college. With every edition of the fest, students of the department come up with innovative ideas to make philosophy accessible to visitors and get them to engage with philosophy. They use short skits, panel discussions, posters, debates, quizzes and many more ways to do the same. Some popular games that have continued to attract visitors are ‘change my mind’, ‘art or not’, ‘it’s a match’, etc.
