The Department of Sociology at Fergusson College (Autonomous), Pune, was established in 1960. Since its inception, the department has played a significant role in enhancing the college’s learning environment through dynamic classroom teaching and impactful outreach activities. With a focus on academic excellence and social relevance, the department offers an undergraduate specialization in Sociology that prepares students for a broad spectrum of career opportunities in research, development sectors, policy-making, education, and beyond. In line with the evolving academic landscape, the department adopted the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from the academic year 2023–24. Under this framework, we offer a wide range of courses such as Open Electives (OE), Minor Courses, Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), Value-Added Skill Courses (VSC), and Field Papers (FP). These innovative courses aim to provide students with practical skills and interdisciplinary knowledge. The department also offers application-oriented subjects like Data Analytics for Social Research, Sociology of Finance, Social Counselling, Human Resource Management and Society, Social Entrepreneurship and NGO Management, and Health Sociology and Public Health, keeping pace with the demands of a rapidly changing job market. To further enrich student learning and engagement, the department runs various co-curricular activities through its vibrant, student-driven club VIVIDHA. It also publishes a departmental magazine titled SAMASHTI, which is edited and managed by students. These platforms encourage critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative learning, fostering a deeper understanding of contemporary social issues and preparing students to become responsible citizens and professionals
