The Department of Statistics was established in 1955-56. During the years 1955-1972 both the Statistics Department and Mathematics Departments were functioning under the same association. The functioning of the Statistics association was started in the year 1962-1963. The association was inaugurated on 24th August 1962 by Dr. S.W. Dharmadhikari, who delivered a talk on “Cantor Set”. Distinguished and renowned Statisticians including Dr. Huzurbazar, Dr.Y. S. Sathe, Dr. Badhe, Dr. B. K. Kale, Dr. A.V. Kharshikar delivered lectures as a part of this activity. The faculty at that time included eminent professors like Dr. D. S. Bhoj, Dr. A.V. Godambe who later joined as faculty in the State University of Pennsylvania. Renowned Statistician Dr. B. K. Kale was the faculty member in the department who later joined Department of Statistics, University of Pune.
Prof. A. K. Mahajani shouldered the responsibility as the head of the department of Statistics since 1966 to 1998. After his retirement Prof. Ms. S.V. Bakare headed the department of Statistics till February 2001. Prof. Mrs. P.G. Limaye took the charge as the head of the department after the retirement of Prof. Ms. S.V. Bakare till April 2005. Meanwhile Prof. Mrs. B.A. Sathe, Prof. A. S. Prabhu took voluntary retirement from their services. Prof. R.S. Bhatkhande took the charge as the head of the department after the retirement of Prof. Mrs P.G. Limaye till October 2011. Present head of the department is Dr. Subhash S. Shende.

Bhatkhande took the charge as the head of the department after the retirement of Prof. Mrs P.G. Limaye till October 2011. Present head of the department is Dr. Subhash S. Shende.

In the year 2017, Dr. Nileema Bhalerao was awarded Ph.D in Statistics from Savitribai Phule Pune University. The title of her Thesis is “Contribution to the inferences in Software Reliability Models.” In the year 2020, Dr. Subhash S. Shende was awarded Ph.D in Statistics from Savitribai Phule Pune University. The title of his Thesis is “Modeling Maternal infant HIV Transmission.”
A Teacher training program on “Use of SPSS for Statistical Analysis”was conducted on 4th Jan 2012. Also a National Conference on “Recent trends in Applied Statistics: an interdisciplinary approach” was organized during March 13-14, 2013.
Online Training Program titled “Statistical Analysis using R” held from 15th July 2022 to 28th July 2022 for student’s FY, SY and TY under STRIDE.

Every year, since 1998 the student’s strength for Statistics program is increasing. Students perform various projects under different schemes such as DBT STAR, CE etc. Most of the students pursue their higher education in Statistics from reputed universities in India and abroad. They get placements in renowned companies like Infosys, Accenture, Cytel etc.
