Department of Zoology

Fergusson College started Department of Biology in the year 1905. The Department of Zoology established as a separate department in the year 1916. The Department has a recognized post graduate research center.

The Department of Zoology has a Zoological Museum it has heritage status given by UGC in 2015. It has some common as well as unique zoological specimens, like skeletons of vertebrate animals and models. It is probably the oldest museum in India. The collection of skeletons (entire) and parts of the skeleton of the wild animals like Hippopotamus, Giraffe, Tigers, Cattle, Birds like Ostrich, Kiwi and reptiles like crocodile, snake and Varanus are well preserved for reference. Entire skeleton of Python, preserved specimen of Australian Lung Fish, stuffed specimen of Duck-billed Platypus and its skeleton; are main attractions for Zoologists and has been resource of reference material for researchers.

The Department is supported and recognized under DST-FIST, CPE Programme. The department conducts yearly student oriented programme like Zoology association, exhibition and excursion. The department has departmental library for students and teachers.

Zoology Association-

This is co-curricular activity run by department since last 45 years.
This activity is completely run by students of UG and PG program under guidance of faculty members. under this the activities like guest lecture of renowned scientists, resource persons from universities and research institute are being conducted. The science exhibition is being arranged by students, the students prepare the exhibits working models, informative charts. The wildlife photographs competitions are being regularly arranged. Students participate in these activities full of enthusiasm. The exhibition and activities are being assessed by external experts and the prizes are given to selected students. The response to this activity is remarkable and many students participate as coordinator, volunteers and participants. This is one of the best student’s centric activities of the zoology department.
